2010 : East on Crew's Hole Road
Mostly factories in this area up to the 1970's on both sides of the river, made popular for this purpose by the presence of coal mines on Troopers Hill, seen to the left, also quarries for stone and clay. The River Avon provided transport. Now given over to housing developments handy for the city centre.

Prudent cyclists will dismount unless they have very good brakes. There were quarries in this area in the 18th/19th century.

New housing on the Avon, St George, Bristol
The towpath here is now wide and well-surfaced providing excellent access for walkers and cyclists. Unfortunately, this does not continue much further before joining the nearby busy road.

Beyond this point, the gradient increases steeply as the lane ascends the hillside of Crew's Hole to eventually join Beaufort Road.
