Line of Works
Bristol's growing population demanded fresh drinking water, and so Bristol Water Works was founded in 1846. As part of the mission to meet demand, a large project was unveiled to link the waters of the Mendip Hills to the city. To bring the water several miles north, a pipe was constructed that crossed the landscape; it used gravity to move the water and hence the pipe (Line of Works) occasionally breaks surface and is carried on piers across valleys. The iron pipe is thirty inches (76cm) in diameter and is part of a water gathering network of 100 miles (160km).

Water and God
Winford has a couple of interesting features - the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Peter, and the Line of Works aqueduct.

Water into Winford
The aqueduct runs through a lot of north Somerset, breaking the surface when the land drops into a valley. Here, just on the outskirts of Winford, it makes a short span before disappearing under the soil again. The pipework actually employs a gravity system - there are no pumps!

2012 : East of north from the B3130
From a small car park north of the road a field gate gives access to a pasture leading down to the Winford Brook. The slope on the other side rises to Dundry Hill which dominates the far side of the valley between here and Chew Magna. Winford Lane can be seen to the left worming its way up the hill and over the top to Dundry.

Emerging from the land
The Bristol Water Works 'Line of Works' was created in the mid-1800s to transport millions of gallons of water from the various sources along the Mendip Hills on to reservoirs at Barrow, before sending it into the city. This massive project brought many miles of tunnels, conduits and aqueducts across the landscape. Here, just on the edge of Winford, the pipe emerges and becomes an aqueduct as it spans the small stream the wends through the village.

Almost covered up
The Monarch's Way path crosses the B3130 and goes across farmland to Winford here. The sign is almost covered up by some legal notices. Adding to the welcome was the fact that the large gate that marks this farm track was swung open and chained to the kissing gate that should have been used!

Keeping up with the herd
Some inquisitive cattle followed your intrepid Geograph correspondent up the hill, perhaps thinking there might be some food or access into another field. Not today, sadly.

The line still standing
A detail of the wrought iron pipework, standing on limestone piers, that is The Line of Works. The works were built in the mid-1800s to supply water from the Mendips and the reservoir lakes to Bristol. See Image] for a wider view.

Ever get the feeling you're being followed?
A walk through the countryside often entails a close encounter with livestock. This herd of young and rather inquisitive cattle must have though there was a feed for them somewhere, but sadly they were left disappointed. In the background is the Line of Works aqueduct and the village of Winford.
