Derelict Springfield/Old Mills Colliery
Springfield Colliery, opened c1872 & was situated south of what is now the A362. Nearby, north of the A362, was Old Mills Colliery, opened c1860. Originally they were linked by a narrow gauge tramway but in October 1941 a connection underground was made. Although the Old Mills shaft was closed for coal winding the combined colliery was known as Old Mills. The buildings shown here are on the Springfield site. Closure came in 1966 leaving only the collieries at Kilmersdon & Writhlington (Image) in the Somerset coalfield. The site is now part of a Tesco superstore. 2 years before closure I made a memorable visit to the mine during an end-of-term school trip. I am grateful to Simon Carter of the Radstock Museum (http://radstockmuseum.co.uk/ ) for help in identifying this location.

2009 : Parapet of a bridge over a disused railway
Made of cast iron plates riveted together, they made it to last, pity about the railway. The line formerly ran from Bristol south through Whitchurch, Pensford and Clutton. We see the remains of it just before it reaches Midsomer Norton. I should add, this was a single line branch of the G.W.R. (God's Wonderful Railway).

Not volcanic
A coal spoil heap rises above the greenery. Midsomer Norton and Radstock were important coalmining areas from the late 18th century, and production gradually increased with time up to 1900. However, the complicated local geology and nationalisation eventually led to the closure of all mining in September 1973. The heap is actually a SSSI and contains some interesting fossils, including the world's earliest known damselfly!
