A plaque to Sir Michael Redgrave
This humble residence (now a shop) was the home of one of Bristol's famous actors. Sir Michael Redgrave was born and educated in Bristol before embarking on a glittering acting career.
Perhaps the trainers wrapped around the wires are merely a strange advert - see
Image] for the shop.

Packed up and gone
The Scotchman has apparently left for home; this little pub has been closed to travellers for some time now.
The name had not changed since the mid-nineteenth century and in fact has nothing to do with Caledonian walkers. The pub is located on the steep St Michael's Hill; goods brought by road came by horse and cart. In order to prevent the cart running downhill at a rate, wooden blocks - called Scotches - were placed under the wheels to chock them. The man who carried a backpack of them was familiarly known as a Scotchman.

He's packed his bag and gone!
This pub on St Michael's Hill seems to have fallen during the Covid era. Shame, as it has been trading for many years and has kept its name for at least 150, unlike so many others.
It has nothing to do with people from north of the border, nor the famous liquor. It derives from the term 'scotch' (various spellings) that were wooden wedges placed under cart wheels to stop them rolling back down steep hills - like this one! A scotchman was the carter who delivered goods.

No return for the Scotchman
The pub remains closed and looking unlikely that it will reopen soon.

Easy Runner, on Horfield Road
This is a common sight on this road, runners trying out their shoes, up and down the hill.
