Chapel Allerton: Ashton Windmill
The mill dates from about 1760 and ceased work in 1927. Now preserved, it is owned by Sedgemoor District Council and is the only windmill in Somerset to retain its sails, machinery and millstones. Public access is permitted on Sundays and Bank Holidays between Easter and September

Windmill mechanism
Some of the mainly wooden components to be found in a working windmill. This is the wallower, and takes the force from the horizontal windshaft and brake wheel (upper left of frame) and converts it into turning the vertical mainshaft down to the grinding stones on the floor below. See Image] for more views inside this restored mill.

Where the wheat goes
By using an agitator driven off the main machinery, the sacks of grain are loaded into a hopper that slowly feeds down into the grinding stones below it. See Image] for more views of the workings.

The Governor
Once a fully operative flour mill, Ashton windmill still retains a lot of the necessary machinery. This is the governor, and controls the speed of the system to prevent it going too fast. See Image] for more pictures of the gubbins.
