Medway Queen project, Albion Dockyard, Bristol
Viewed in late October 2012 when work is in progress on the project to build the first fully-riveted paddle steamer in the UK for sixty years. A nearby information board states the original Medway Queen was built in Troon in 1924, modified in 1938 to burn oil instead of coal. In 1939 the vessel was converted to minesweeping as HMS Medway Queen and took part in the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Returned to civilian use in 1947, the vessel was withdrawn from service in 1963. Its later history includes opening as a nightclub on the Isle of Wight in 1966. This restoration projects aims to use about 65% of the original material from the ship.

Paddle Steamer Medway Queen - Engine
Medway Queen has had a new riveted hull built to the 1924 drawings but this is the original engine that has had a lot of work done on. Don't be fooled by the 'rough' appearance - there's no point doing the final 'bulling up' until the vessel is virtually complete. For the record, it is a diagonal compound built in 1924 by Ailsa Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Troon. The cylinders are 21" & 43" x 48" and it was good for 900 ihp. The vessel has had a chequered career including several trips to Dunkirk to evacuate allied troops. She has struggled for survival since the 1970s but with sufficient funds she will make it back into steam. The vessel had just been rededicated at David Abels Shipyard in Bristol and the public were allowed on board to see progress.

Medway Queen - paddle wheel
A view inside the port paddle box with the feathering paddle wheel being reconstructed. The floats (paddles) have yet to be fitted. This is not a view you would get everyday. The Medway Queen is undergoing a major rebuild in Bristol and is to be finished in Kent when the money can be found.
