Keeping an eye out
The interior of St James includes this fine 'oculus' - the small circular window at the top of the west wall. It was originally a window that the clergy would look out of to observe their flock. These days the former Benedictine Priory has changed quite a lot and some of the features have gone. Fortunately, this oculus remains (albeit stained); it is thought to be the oldest example in Britain. See Image] for the outside view.

Bristol's oldest face
The west wall of the old St James Priory. It is believed to be the oldest building in the city that is still occupied. Founded by Robert Fitzroy (Earl of Gloucester, son of Henry I and illegitimate grandson of William the Conqueror) in 1129 it served generations of priors until the Dissolution of 1540. Nowadays it has enjoyed a multi-million pound conservation and is a charity devoted to helping vulnerable people a mental health problem and also those in recovery from drug and alcohol dependence. The circular window at the top is an 'oculus'; see Image] for the interior view and more details.

St James' west end
A view of the west end of the remaining structures of St James. Thought to be the oldest buildings in Bristol, the church was founded in around 1129 as a priory by Robert, First Earl of Gloucester. The west end of the present church is believed to have been completed about 1170 and contains what is thought to be the earliest oculus (or round) wheel window in the country. Grade I listed.
