Last Public Toilets Before France
So says the sign above the windows. I'm sure there are some available on the ferry if not perhaps a quiet spot over the side of ship. Just make sure you check the direction of the wind. The toilets are located at the north western corner of Image near the junction of Fort Road and Court Farm Road.

Gibbon Road
Named after the Gibbon family who were 18th century lords of the manor, their cousin was Edward Gibbon, the famous historian. The road first appeared in the early 20th century and was gradually extended further up the valley over the following decades. The houses on the left were built on the site of a former tramway built in 1878 by the Earl of Sheffield to link the West Quay with Meeching Quarry and was pulled during the Second World War.

The Harbourside, Fort Road
Former hotel constructed in 1891 on the junction of Fort Road and Gibbon Road. Previously known as the Sheffield Arms and named after the local landowner, the hotel/pub only changed its name four years ago. There has been mention of a previous pub bearing the same name on or near the site from the 1860s serving a small shanty town that grew up whlst the nearby breakwater was being constructed. The area between the two road junctions on the left (Court Farm Road and Gibbon Road) was once a tramway connecting the nearby Meeching Quarry to the harbourside and operated between 1878 and 1939.

Fort Road Recreation Ground
Viewed from the foot of Castle Hill and looking towards the new West Quay development with the ferry, Seven Sisters, visible to the right. A cricket ground existed here from the 1890s with a pond at the northern end where the bowls green is now located which seems to have been drained around the First World War though the park has been prone to the odd flooding ever since.

Old Coastguard Cottages
Dating from the early 19th century they overlook the harbour and for many years were the only buildings in the vicinity. The town reached the cottages by the early 20th century and had engulfed them during the interwar years. They are located at a right angle off Geneva Road.
