Newhaven fort, entrance
This was and still is the entrance to the fort, across the moat and through a tunnel, although the bridge is rather more permanently welcoming than in its operational days. The fort was built as part of Lord Palmerston's defensive improvements along the south coast in the 1870s and is the largest defensive work ever constructed in Sussex.

It was the largest defence work ever built in Sussex and is now open as a museum. More details at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newhaven_Fort Fort website: http://www.newhavenfort.org.uk/

Scrap metal on the Ouse
On the left bank of the river, near its mouth, is this massive pile of scrap metal. I presume there is a scrap metal merchant here and this is waiting transport by ship to who knows where. I wonder how much is actually in the river?
