Goring Road, Steyning
A residential road that links Jarvis Lane to Bramber Road at Heathen's Burial Corner. Once a field called The Barrack Field, after former army barracks based on Jarvis Lane, the southern end had been laid out as far as Castle Lane by the 1890s though sparsely developed with this section to the north added soon after. Deevelopment appeared a little slower with the eastern side north of Castle Lane fully developed by 1932 and the western side filled by nurseries until the 1970s. This view looks southwards from the northern end of the road.

34, Goring Road, Steyning
A former Victorian coach house that has been converted into a dwelling. Its parent home was originally located on the corner of College Hill and later became a nursing home which was demolished at the turn of this century and replaced by a block of flats called Carisbrooke Lodge.

College Hill, Steyning
College Hill runs from High Street to Goring Road and was laid out by the late 1890s though development was intermittent in the years after. On the left is Swallowmead a development containing three blocks of flats that was constructed around 2003-04 on the site of a former large house called Swallowfield that ended its existence as a care home.

Castle Lane, Steyning
Up to 1764 this was the main Steyning to Bramber road until it was superseded by Clays Hill that became the A283 until replaced by the Steyning By-Pass in 1981. Castle lane turns east from Jarvis Lane crosses Goring Road then descends a small low lying area and currently ending at the by-pass. However, previously it had crossed the railway then followed the western side of Bramber Castle to the current roundabout. This view is looking east from the junction with Goring Road.

The Malt House, Castle Lane, Steyning
One of the few remnants of the former Gates's Brewery which was located on Jarvis Lane beyond the junction to the left. The brewery was established in the early 19th century and was known as Three Tuns Brewery for a while until it merged with neighbouring Mitchell's (See
Image) in 1899 to become Steyning Breweries. This business lasted until 1927 when it was acquired by Rock Breweries of Brighton who appear to have closed the brewery and demolished the main buildings as no trace can be found on the 1932 OS map. This store and a former cottage on Jarvis Lane near the junction with High Street are all that remains.

Oxford Terrace, Jarvis Lane, Steyning
There is a stone plaque above number one at the far end which gives a date of building which I could roughly make out as 1928. This makes sense as the previous building was one located with Gates's Brewery which closed in 1927. The brick work on the retaining wall in the foreground certainly looks older than that used by the houses. Beyond is
