North Lane
An old drove road that once connected the manors and estates on and at the foot of the Downs with the woodland pasture in the Weald. The route is marked as a highway on older maps but seems to have fallen out of importance with the coming of the motor car and is now a private road providing access to a number of dwellings that line its route and a public bridleway. The two cottages on the left show classic signs of squatting, whereby their predecessors inclosed a narrow strip on a wide droveway and built a cottage and a small garden prior to claiming squatters rights.
