Middle Street
Looking towards the junction with North Street with 19th century cottages on one side and old flint workshops which seem to have been converted to garages on the other, a reminder that until the 19th century this was the northern limit of Old Shoreham.

Church of St. Mary de Haura, Shoreham - fragment of original west end
The 'de Haura' bit describes the location, not the particular Mary. It has similar roots to le Havre, the Haven. A 12th century grade I listed building, it formerly extended a considerable way westwards, that part was ruined in the 17th century, apparently from neglect, and demolished in the early 18th. This fragment of the west end is preserved. It was a very big cruciform church in its prime.

St Mary de Haura Church, Shoreham-by-Sea - ruined nave
The western end of the nave collapsed around 1700 although exactly why is not known. Certainly, by that time, Shoreham had become less important than it was in medieval times and it is known that the nave had fallen into a state of disrepair, the town probably no longer able to maintain such a large church. It is also possible that the church was damaged in the English Civil War and a ferocious storm in 1703 might have finally finished the building off. What remains is visible here in the churchyard, surrounded by gravestones.
