A27 from above Southwick Hill tunnels, east end
The Southwick Hill downland was preserved by taking the more expensive option of tunnelling through the hill rather than a cutting.

End of Mile Oak Road
As seen from Mile Oak Farm. The underpass takes the road under the Brighton bypass, just before the tunnel under Southwick Hill. Just past the Land Rover and car is the entrance to a Water works which had a steam driven pump. This if I remember correctly was demolished in the late 50's and replaced with the more modern equivalent.

Southwick Hill Tunnel
Built in 1992 as part of the Brighton By-Pass and as a method of avoiding a huge cutting in a popular public open space. After 8-10 inches of snow fell overnight the A27 is empty despite it being cleared.
