Tony Magdi's, Portland Road
A local greengrocers that was closed last week on the death of its owner who died after an infection having been hospitalised when he was punched and hit his head on the pavement after a dispute with a couple of cyclists. The huge number of cards and bouquets are a testament to his local popularity being known to donate any leftover fruit and veg to local charities, shelters and anyone else who was needy enough for them. Located on the corner of Portland Road and Westbourne Street.

The Westbourne, Portland Road, Aldrington, Hove
Completed in 1881 it was the first building to be erected in what later became Portland Road. Known initially as the Aldrington Hotel and later as just the Aldrington the pub acquired its current name sometime in the last decade located as it is on the corner of Westbourne Street. The road name is a reminder of an old ditch or stream that once formed the parish boundary between Hove and Aldrington. To the left is 1904 extension that was originally built as a billaird room.

Residential street running between Rutland Road and Sackville Road with this section looking towards the latter from the crossroads with Westbourne Street. Part of the area known as Poets Corner on the account of the road names rather than any bohemian lifestyle.

Cowper Street, Aldrington, Hove
A residential road running between Rutland Road and Sackville Road, the A2023, that was built in the 1890s. Located within the Poets Corner district of the city so called because of the street names as opposed to any bohemian tendencies. This street is named after William Cowper.

This block is located between Westbourne Street and Rutland Road and was built in the 1890s originally as housing but later converted to shops as the area grew and Portland Road became a main thoroughfare.

11, Portland Road, Hove
Built in 1892 and opened the following year as a police convalescent home to replace a smaller building that had originally opened in nearby Clarendon Villas in 1890. The building became an auxiliary hospital during World War One returning to its original use in 1919 and continuing in that role until 1966 when a new modern building was opened on the seafront at Kingsway, see Image The building was sold to East Sussex county Council who converted it into a nursing home which it has remained ever since now operating under the name of Middleton Grove.
