Kingsway
There has long been a coastal route between Brighton and Shoreham but was often prey to erosion and inclement weather which meant many went inland and took the Old Shoreham Road. A turnpike was built from the late 18th century and initially travelled past empty fields but was gradually filled by developments. It has been the A259 since 1922.

Walsingham Terrace, Kingsway, Aldrington, Hove
I've used the old name to cover the block that is made up of numbers 195-203, Horizon and Dorset Court that is located between Carlisle Road and Walsingham Road. The ten house terrace originally covered the whole block and was built in the 1880s. Numbers 9-10 on the corner of Carlisle Road was destroyed by a bomb during World War Two and was replaced by Dorset Court in 1958. Numbers 6-8 were deemed to be unsafe and pulled down in 1964, see http://regencysociety-jamesgray.com/volume15/source/jg_15_036.html , and replaced by flats used as a police convalescent home which moved to Surrey in 1988 then as the Excelsior Hotel. This was refurbished in 2004 as a new apartment block called Horizon. Numbers 1-5 survive and were renumbered 195-203 Kingsway in the 1960s as Walsingham Terrace disappeared.

Girton House, Kingsway
Viewed from the Western Lawns. The vacant plot to the right is the site of the former Sackville Hotel built in 1904 and a favourite haunt of celebrities during the 50s and 60s. The hotel lost its lustre during the 70s and 80s and was reduced from 5 stars to 3 even becoming temporary council accommodation during the 90s. New owners planned to return the hotel to its former glory and undertook a massive rebuild but unfortunately the roof collapsed in April 2006 and destabilised the building enough for the residents of Girton House to be evacuated. The structure was pulled down not long after.
