There has long been a coastal route between Brighton and Shoreham but was often prey to erosion and inclement weather which meant many went inland and took the Old Shoreham Road. A turnpike was built from the late 18th century and initially travelled past empty fields but was gradually filled by developments. It has been the A259 since 1922.
