Palmeira Avenue, Eastern Side
Palmeira Avenue extends from Palmeira Square in the south past the County Cricket Ground until it reaches Cromwell Road. Named after a Portuguese title of Sir Isaac Goldsmid, a banker and financier who bought the local Wick Estate as a seaside retreat in the 1830s then proceeded to develop it. This part, between Palmeira Square and Lansdowne Road, was begun in the 1850s.

Palmeira Avenue, Western Side
The building with the scaffolding was once the home of Sir Jack Hobbs, Surrey and England cricketer. This is the point of the avenue where the red brick buildings change into the white classical design of the 1830s.

Hove: Sir Jack Hobbs lived here
Sir Jack Hobbs, the most prolific batsman of all time (61,670 runs and 199 centuries) lived in this house on Palmeira Avenue.
