Palmeira Avenue extends from Palmeira Square in the south past the County Cricket Ground until it reaches Cromwell Road. Named after a Portuguese title of Sir Isaac Goldsmid, a banker and financier who bought the local Wick Estate as a seaside retreat in the 1830s then proceeded to develop it. This part, between Palmeira Square and Lansdowne Road, was begun in the 1850s.
