Courtenay Terrace, Kingsway, Hove
On the right are Courtenay House, Courtenay Tye, Courtenay Beach and Courtenay Lodge which were built in the 1840s. On the far left is Little Courtenay that was built in 1899 on the site of western end of Mills terrace. Between them is Courtenay Towers and Courtenayside which were originally a single building called Hove Lea that was constructed in 1875 and divided and largely rebuilt in 1933. The terrace originally came with a private beach to the south but this was compulsory purchased by the council in 1908 in order to carry out sea defence work. See Image for a view from the south.

Courtenay Terrace, Kingsway, Hove
A view of Image from King's Esplanade. From left to right: Courtenay House, Courtenay Tye, Courtenay Beach, Courtenay Lodge, Courtenayside, Courtenay Towers and Little Courtenay. The first four were constructed in the 1840s, Courtenayside and Courtenay Towers were originally a single residence called Hove Lea that had been built in 1876 and divided and refurbished in 1933, Little Courtenay was built in 1899. All the residences originally possessed their own private beach at the southern end of their gardens. The beach was lost to a compulsory purchase order in 1908 when the council wished to strengthen the beach defences.

Courtenay Terrace
1840s terrace on Kingsway, with rear gardens backing on to King's Esplanade, as seen here. The gardens originally extended to the front, with a private beach, but they were truncated following a compulsory purchase order by Hove Council in the 1900's in order to give a continuous promenade above the beach. Courtenay Terrace
Late Regency housing with uninterrupted views to the sea and entrances in Kingsway. The small green belongs to Medina Terrace and is the only break in housing, other than roads, between Courtenay Gate and the King Alfred Leisure Centre.

The Priory, St Catherine's Terrace, Hove
Located on the corner of Medina Villas and built in the early 1960s on the site of a former house that was also known locally as The Priory that had been built in 1864, see http://regencysociety-jamesgray.com/volume12/source/jg_12_027.html for a view from 1958 taken prior to demolition.
