Brunswick Street West
The big Brunswick Square development was flanked by two service roads, Brunswick Street East and West. The street still retains a number of small workshops and businesses though many have now been converted into cottages. The original Brunswick Town Hall and Police Station were also in this street being further up next to the cars parked on the left. One is now a snooker hall the other a pub called the Bow Street Runner.

Brunswick Street West
Looking up to the junction with Western Road. The street was built as part of the Brunswick Estate in the 1820s primarily as a service road. To the left is Burger Off a pleasantly named takeaway which lies conveniently near to a pub a few doors up called the Bow Street Runner, which apparently was once the local police station for the newly built Brunswick Estate which had become the Station Inn by the turn of the 20th century. The large building next door to the pub was built in 1855-56 and was the original town hall for Brunswick later becoming Hove's first town hall before that decamped to bigger premises in Church Road. The building is currently used as part of the campus for the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Western Road is nigh on straight throughout its length. This junction with Lansdowne Place is one of the few places where there is a slight bend.

50-59, Western Road, Hove
Originally a department store, Hills of Hove, which was founded by William Hill at number 58 in 1839 and gradually extended eastwards over the rest of the 19th century. The individual shopfronts were merged and extensively rebuilt in 1921 and the premises continued as a department store until its closure in 1982. Since then the ground floor has been subdivided into individual units including Starbucks and Sainsbury's whilst the upper floors have been converted into flats. See http://www.photosbrightonandhove.org.uk/hills-of-hove-shortly-before-closure.html for an image taken in 1982 before closure.
