Mercia House, Lansdowne Road
At the southern end of York Avenue you come to the junction with Lansdowne Road. We are still in Hove and the red terracotta gothic style recalls some of the big Hove houses to the west. Once a large house Mercia House is now subdivided into flats.

Former Church, Montpelier Terrace
Continue up Temple Street then turn west into Montpelier Terrace. You will then pass what was once St Stephens church. This was opened in 1851 with an interior reconstructed from the Royal Chapel of the Pavilion. It remained a church until 1939 before becoming home to the Sussex Diocese Association of the Deaf and Dumb. Since 1974 it has been a day centre for the homeless run by Free Base.

116-116a, Western Road, Brighton
Number 116a is located on the corner and was originally a town house in Norfolk Road that was converted into a bank in 1895 for Capital and Counties who moved from
Image on the south eastern side of Norfolk Square. Capital & Counties was absorbed by Lloyds after World War One who continued operating here until closing the branch in the early 1990s. Since 2001 it has been a fish and chip restaurant called Bankers which offers both a takeaway and restaurant service and is generally believed by locals to be a chippy of much higher quality than those who peddle towards the tourist.
Bankers has also extended into 116 which had operated independently previously. It was a coach builder in 1845, a fruit and potato merchant during the 1860s, a cabinet maker into the 1870s, then just under forty years as a furniture dealer, one of whom James Abell would extend into neighbouring
Image By 1914 it was a trunk maker, then 30 years as a ladies hairdresser before return to furniture in the 1960s. A brief period as a sex aid supplier was followed by Trend Hair Boutique who dealt in wigs trading under a variety of names (Trend Wig Centre, Trendman Toupees and Trendco) and still trade today further down the Hove part of Western Road in Sheridan House.

115, Western Road, Brighton
The most westerly shop in Brighton on the northern side. To its left is Boundary Passage which marks the old parish boundary between Brighton and Hove. The subsequent shop built in the old Langhams Hotel is in Hove and is numbered accordingly (no.134).
The building probably dates from around 1825 when it was erected to serve as a toll gate to collect duty on coal as it entered the borough. The duty was original instituted in 1773 for cargo landed from the sea and used to fund the building of groynes and other sea defences. In 1825 it was extended to transport on land and remained a significant revenue cash cow for the council until its abolition in 1887. By 1848 the building shared its space with a fire station run by Brighton Police which remained here until 1902 when it moved to bigger premises on Preston Circus. Equipment was kept outside the front of the building and hitched to the nearest available horse drawn cab in the event of an emergency, though the hose was carried on foot.
After 1902 the building was briery occupied by JJ Abell who expanded into from
Image though he moved out both shops the following year. The next record appears in 1908 when the building was converted into an estate agent, Stringer & Dinnock who operated here for nearly 70 years, sharing space with offices for a number of building societies during that period. They were replaced by Max Huizinga who would later move to
Image with the shop becoming a florist for much of the 1990s before returning to the property business. Since 2001 it has been a series of letting agents.
