Monken Pyn (1)
The name comes from 'Monken pond' or Monks Pound an area where the monks from nearby Wilmington Priory enclosed their cattle. Known as Monkyn Pyn from 1673 though both Yeakell & Gardner's map of 1778-83 and the tithe survey of 1838 have this as Mountain Pen Green. There is still a triangular green straddling Thornwell Road and this is the western half, see Image for the eastern part. Viewed from the Moorshill Lane entrance with Wilmington Hill in the distance.

Kiln Roundabouts
The name of the field according to Wilmington's 1838 tithe map viewed from Thornwell Road. The roundabouts part of the name derives from a description of an area of land that is usually surrounded by various features on all sides, in this case a small stream, road and other fields. A layer of chalk has been laid on the ground at the field entrance to make a harder surface particularly as this meadow lies next to a small stream.
