Alfriston buildings [22]
This village stores and house was built in the 18th century. Constructed of painted brick, partly stuccoed, under a tile roof. The 18th century shopfront has two curved windows with glazing bars, flanked by pilasters and a central doorway with fan ornamentation in the tympanum. Listed, with the shopfront making the property grade II*, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1293397 Alfriston is a village in East Sussex, some 6½ miles northwest of Eastbourne and 3½ miles northeast of Seaford. The village lies on the west bank of the Cuckmere River. There is evidence of occupation in the Neolithic period, with several long barrows on the surrounding downs. The village is home to The Star Inn, built in 1345 to accommodate monks and pilgrims en route from Battle Abbey to Chichester Cathedral. Also in the village is the Old Clergy House, the first building acquired by the National Trust in 1898.

Harvey's brewery of old
A reproduction on the side of a Harvey's delivery van. This part of the brewery is still much the same, although the river is no longer used for transport and there is a wall along the wharf.

Cuckmere Bus in Alfriston
Cuckmere buses were set up in the 1970s to fill the gap left by the withdrawal of commercial services. The charity has built up a network of services with the help of volunteer drivers. The no 47 shown here runs hourly at weekends in British Summer Time on an anti-clockwise route between Berwick Station, Alfriston, Seaford and the Cuckmere villages.

Alfriston village centre
Alfriston village centre showing 'Ye old Smugglers Inne'. Once called the Market Cross House several years ago its façade was hit by a red car which after the crash drove off leaving its number plate in the wreckage. The vehicle was found burned out some miles away but the owner was never traced. For some time while the building's front was being repaired a large cover was put over it with a painting of the vehicle lodged into the pub. The repairs revealed an original (blocked up) Tudor window that was restored, as well as the original ceiling in the locals' bar.
