Garden on the way to Lullington Church
Reached up a pretty footpath, Lullington Church, also known as the Church of the Good Shepherd, is claimed to be the smallest church in England. It was built from the remains of the chancel of an earlier church that was destroyed by fire during the 17th century. It measures 16 feet square and seats 20 people. This view is from the path up to the church. It passes an attractive wild garden with views of the South Downs behind.
This was a baking hot summer's day and there was little shelter on the Downs. The cool interior of the church gave welcome respite.

Lullington Church - The Church of the Good Shepherd
Possibly the smallest church in the country - only 5 metres square. Services are held here on the third Sunday of the month. The remains of a larger twelfth century church can be seen just to the right of the door and in the churchyard.

Lullington Church, 1952
Reputed to be one of the smallest churches in the country, but remains to the west of the entrance indicate it was once part of a larger church. It was last restored in 1894.

Church of the Good Shepherd, Lullington
One of the smallest churches in England measuring about 16 feet square with seating for about 20. To keep with the rustic charm it has no electricity so services are only held during the summer months. Its original dedication was thought to be St Switha, its current one was given in 2000. Its history is a bit harder to fathom, the first records date from the 12th century and during the medieval period through bequests the church was extended and rebuilt and at one point had a tower. It fell into decay during the late medieval period when the community it served shrank. Archeological diggings have uncovered evidence of fire whilst tradition has it most of the church was destroyed during the Cromwellian era and rebuilt within the remaining portion of the chancel. Lullington lost its parish in 1927 when it was united with nearby Alfriston.
