Lewis Carrol's tunnel from Sussex Square to the beach, Brighton
Author Lewis Carroll used to spend his summers in the salubrious setting of Sussex Square in Brighton. He particularly liked being in the secluded gardens that were created in the square and neighbouring Lewes Crescent. Carroll, whose real name was the Rev Charles Dodgson, was always fascinated by the secret tunnel which goes from the gardens under the coast road towards the beach and he immortalised it by using it in the opening scene of his classic children’s story Alice In Wonderland. Alice falls down a rabbit hole which quickly becomes a steep, long, narrow tunnel and starts her amazing adventures.
The gardens were used for military purposes during the Second World War and the tunnel was bricked up. It didn’t re-open until after renovation in 1952.
Several films have been shot there including part of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever starring Barbra Streisand.

Tunnel into Sussex Square gardens
The view as you travel north, away from the seafront toward Sussex Square using the private tunnel and gardens that, supposedly, inspired Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland.

Kemp Town, lamp post
One of a series on Marine Parade; elaborate cast-iron castings, with a two-armed head. Those on the other side of the road have a similar shaft, but simpler head.

An Alice In Wonderland moment...
As I surveyed the hidden corners of the gardens at Sussex Square, where Lewis Carroll, it is said, was moved to create Alice In Wonderland, I was rather amazed to see a rabbit. He looked at me, paused, and headed off toward the tunnel.

Empty Building, Black Rock
On the former cliff opposite the Black Rock terminus of the Volks Railway. Built the same time as the original Kemp Town development the former cliffs were sloped and made into gardens accessed via a tunnel that came out at this point between two small cottages. The tunnel has long been blocked and for a while it was a reading room. Currently empty though a 'for let' sign on the building seems to want to convert the building into a cafe. The road in the foreground is Madeira Drive.
