Lewes Crescent, Kemp Town, Brighton
A view of numbers 1-14 on the western side whose facades were completed in 1827 though the interiors on a number were not completed until much later. Number 1 on the left is Fife House once home to the Duke of Devonshire and later the Duke and Duchess of Fife, the latter the daughter of Edward VII who convalesced here in 1908. Number 13 in the distance was home to Thomas Cubitt up to his death in 1855. Cubitt was a builder who was involved in a number of projects for the wealthy including the Kemp Town development in Brighton and areas of Bloomsbury and Belgravia in London, whilst for royalty he was involved in the east side of Buckingham Palace and Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Near enough all of the houses have now been converted into apartments and flats, a trend that began as far back as 1903.
