The Norbreck Hotel, circa 1982
No longer: if you visit Wilmington Square, or look on Google Maps, you will not find the Norbreck - it has been turned into a block of apartments. Gone are the chimneys, the distinctive dormers and the sweeping front steps.

Eastbourne houses [9]
Numbers 1 to 9 Berkley Court in Wilmington Square are flats built in 1992. They are a fine example of modern buildings in sympathy with their surroundings. They are in stark contrast to the eyesore at the seaward end of the block.
Eastbourne is a town and seaside resort on the south coast of East Sussex, some 54 miles south of London and about 19 miles east of Brighton. Although there is evidence of settlement from the Stone Age onwards, Eastbourne remained an area of small rural settlements until the railway arrived in 1849. A resort, built "for gentlemen by gentlemen", was planned and the town's growth accelerated from a population of less than 4,000 in 1851 to nearly 35,000 by 1891. Tourism is a large and important part of the economy of the town.

Eastbourne Heritage Museum
The Eastbourne Heritage Centre, once known as Park Cottage, is a fine example of Victorian architecture and was the home of the manager of the Devonshire Baths which adjoined Park Cottage. Dedicated volunteers and historians fought for its preservation.
Today it is run by the Eastbourne Society http://www.eastbourneheritagecentre.co.uk/welcome/welcome.html
