Arundel: Maltravers Street at dusk
This late September day had been one of the warmest days of the year, but there was no mistaking the autumnal light in the evening sky.

Arundel: lampposts and chimneypots
Looking southwest along Maltravers Street from the junction with New Cut. The lampposts and chimneys are semi-silhouetted as the late evening sun shines almost directly towards us, but the frontages are in shade.

Timber-framed cottage at the corner of Maltravers Street and Bakers Arms Hill
Many of the properties in Maltravers Street are pretty substantial, a fair number of them of 18th century date. To me, this little place looks just about the oldest and smallest dwelling in the street - small in terms of ceiling height, for instance. This must surely be a glimpse of Arundel as it was a couple of centuries before the prosperous redevelopment which took place in Georgian times.

Maltravers Street
One of the earliest streets laid out in Arundel originally being the main road to Chichester until it was finally replaced by a by-pass in 1973. It also hosted the market up to the 18th century before that moved into nearby High Street, after that the name changed from Market Street to its current name and became the main residential street of the town enhanced by the construction of the parade on the left in the 1850s.
