Head west up Trafalgar Street then north into Station Street. Trafalgar Place was opened in 1989 on the site of an old goods yard. The yard was at a lower level to the station and had opened in 1894 and towards the end of its life was used by the Royal Mail. In 1983 it briefly became the town's terminus when British Rail relaid the entire track at the station's entrance. It was then closed and turned into a car park for the rest of the 1980s. Underneath the arches of Brighton station almost hidden away is this delightful little museum that has been exciting kids and making adults nostalgic since 1991. See http://www.brightontoymuseum.co.uk/index.html for more details. The door to the right marks a former cab route to the station platforms. When the station was built the bridge in view and the entrance from Queens Road did not exist, horse drawn carriages had to climb Trafalgar Street but the street was too steep at the top. Consequently, a cab road was built with a lesser gradient allowing entry to platforms 7 and 8. When the new entrance and new road were constructed the arches beneath the station were filled in though the course of the road still exists but no longer has access to the platforms. The windows on the bridge are next to the taxi rank and service road within the station and I'm certain they were added in the 1970s unless my memories as a child of looking down Trafalgar Street from above are deceiving me. Offices near Brighton Station

Toilets and a Cyclist Refreshment Room are next to the service road on the eastern side of the station. The former occupies the former left luggage offices and have been here for some years replacing a former grim facility next to the former Trafalgar Street entrance. The refreshment room was once the Transport Police office and thankfully isn't a 'plastic' coffee chain but a genuinely independent run cafe producing decent food that has proved very popular commuters.
