The lane follows an old track that once led southwards from the old village towards Ferring Rife and the sea. It was developed from the 1920s onwards as a means of accessing the newly developed parts of the village next to the sea.

Clover Lane, Ferring
The road heads west from Ferringham Lane coming to a dead end prior to reaching Ferring Rife. It was developed from the 1930s onwards and occupies a former field called Common Field according to Ferring's 1837 tithe map.
