The hotel was built in 1846 and originally was confined to the distinct section on the right, however, it absorbed the neighbouring Markwells Hotel on the left in 1908. The latter had been built in 1870 on the site of Sake Dene Mahomed's former baths part of which are in situ in the basement.

Looking towards Grand Junction with hotels, Carousel and the Palace Pier behind. The weather, combined with the aroma of non-traditional seaside cuisine, lent the day a Mediterranean feel.

The original eastern end of the seafront road that was laid out in 1821 until the construction of Grand Junction Road seven years later removed the necessity of using this road and neighbouring Pool Valley to access the coastal road to the east. Part of the building behind the scaffold was once the Star & Garter Hotel of which only the western end survives as Dr Brightons.

The name of the A259 between the Palace pier and Thistle Hotel it was opened in 1829 on new sea defences to provide a through route that previously necessitated going via Old Steine and East Street. Queens Hotel is the building on the right. The lights date from 1930. The extended pavement contains both a pavement and cycle lane which causes all sorts of problems when it is busy as the former spill onto the latter providing plenty of arguments and the occasional fisticuff.

The original hotel facing out onto Grand Junction Road was built in 1846 and later acquired Markwell's Hotel to the west which now forms the main entrance. That section can be made out by the scaffolding. The hotel was refurbished in the mid 1980s which included the refshioning the south east corner at the junction with East Street.
