The Cricketers pub
Claims to be the oldest pub in Brighton, dating from 1547. It also claims to be connected to Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper, the suspect Robert Donston Stephenson is said to have stayed upstairs where he planned his notorious crimes. There is also a function room dedicated to author Graham Greene who immortalised The Cricketers in his novel ‘Brighton Rock’.

Italian restaurant, Black Lion Street
One of a small chain of Italian restaurants in tourist cities - others are in Oxford, Bath, etc. Photo taken at Sunday lunchtime on a hot sunny day, this area and The Lanes behind were crowded with day trippers and locals.

Black Lion Lane
Narrow alley linking Black Lion Street with Ship Street, the three tile hung cottages on the southern side are possibly the oldest buildings in Brighton dating from the 17th century. Just visible at the end of the alley is the junction with Ship Street and the continuation of another alley, Ship Street Gardens.

The Old and the New, Black Lion Street
The Black Lion public house after which the street is named, next to the new restaurant owned by Jamie Oliver. The pub today is an exact facsimile of the older pub restored in 1974, and was probably named after the Black Lion of Flanders.
