Gilnow Mill, Bolton
An integrated cotton weaving and spinning mill from the late 1850s. This shows the engine house of 1856 that held a double beam engine by Musgraves of Bolton. This was gear drive to both mill and shed. The architecture is italianate. It's a major feature of the square.

Gilnow Mill - 2
This has been substantially modified over the years. Once the main steam engine ceased to be used, the boiler capacity would have been reduced to what was necessary to provide heating throughout the mill, and other use made of parts of the building. The boilers would probably have been in the left hand part of the building with the round-topped windows; the right hand side with the white panels was the coal bunker area.

Black-headed Gull Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) at Queen's park Lake
Whilst its mate (Image]) flew off, this Black-headed Gull was inquisitive enough to allow me to approach more closely. Definitely not a 'seagull', the Black-headed Gull (whose head is actually more of a chocolate-brown colour than black) is the commonest inland gull, particularly in Northern England, Scotland and Wales (http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/b/blackheadedgull/index.aspx - RSPB). As is the case with many gulls, it had previously been placed in the genus Larus.
