House defiant amid development
The photo tells its own story. The residents of the central house refused to sell out to developers, with the result that the new houses are being built around it. (Eventually a few years later, the development was completed).

Strouden: the forgotten house
Situated at 420 Castle Lane West, this house's neighbours have all been demolished to make way for a retail park, enlargement of the major roundabout here, and a small housing estate to the left. It seems the only fate that can be on the horizon is demolition; perhaps the only reason it survived was because it was used by workmen during all the building work.

Strouden: postbox № BH8 279, Castle Lane West
This double-aperture postbox stands on Castle Lane West, outside Image and on the corner of Bradpole Road. We look west towards another row of shops. This postbox actually has a place in the detection of crime. In 2000-2001 the 'Tesco bomber' demanded ransom from Tesco supermarket, of £1000 a day, or he would target their customers in a letter-bomb campaign. In the course of the police investigation, it was noticed that the envelope containing the demand had burn marks, and they connected this with the fact that this postbox had had some fire damage. Eventually, CCTV mounted above the box produced an image of the blackmailer posting a letter here. There is more on the story here: http://www.south-central-media.co.uk/csi/csi.htm one of many accounts of the case.

Strouden: Homebase store in the old bus sheds
This site, now the Castlemore Retail Park, is the site of the old Yellow Buses depot. The old bus sheds, a listed building, were retained and converted to the anchor Homebase store in the picture. Other modern units continue around the central car park, out of picture to the right. The significance of the bus shed, built in 1951, was that it was the widest single-span roof in Britain of its type, using reinforced concrete thin shell, formed of the nine curved vaults which are evident in the picture.
