Malmesbury Park: this stretch of pavement is footpath C19
This short stretch of pavement in Ascham Road, from its junction with Ophir Road, forms public footpath C19. It connects with footpath C18 at the dead end ahead, while the footbridge, which is path C21, is just to our left. See Image for a view of the far end of the route. Malmesbury Park: footpath C18 reaches Ascham Road
This public footpath has come from Wellington and Portchester Roads, abutting the main A338 Wessex Way which is on our right. It is seen here as it emerges onto Ascham Road and approaches the footbridge across the Wessex Way. At the foot of the bridge ramp, footpath C18 comes to an end; the bridge itself is footpath C21. See: Image for a view towards us from the bottom of the footbridge; Image for a similar view from up on the ramp; and Image for the next view along the path behind us.

Malmesbury Park: footpath C18 and the dead end of Ascham Road
Looking down from the spiral ramp (see Image) along the start of public footpath C18 (left) which runs alongside the A338 Wessex Way (which the footbridge crosses). Ascham Road is one of many that were severed when the Wessex Way was put through, and footpath C18 leads to Wellington Road from the bridge past this dead end and the one in Portchester Road. See Image for a similar view from ground level - at the bottom of the spiral below us, and Image for the view to here from the path as it disappears alongside the house. The pavement of Ashcam Road, against which the car is parked, is also a public right of way: Image

Malmesbury Park: bottom of the footbridge spiral on footpath C21
The footbridge over the Wessex Way is designated a public footpath and numbered C21. We see here where it reaches ground level at the junction of Ascham Road (ahead of us) and Ophir Road (just out of shot to the right). By continuing on the path, we join footpath C18 which abuts the Wessex Way and leads to Portchester Road and Wellington Road. See: Image for a view of the spiral ramp from off to our right; Image for a view along the top of the footbridge itself; and Image for the view towards us on footpath C18.

Malmesbury Park: spiral footbridge access
A coiled ramp providing access to the footbridge over the main Wessex Way, saving a considerable detour for pedestrians. The footbridge forms public footpath C21. See Image for a view from the spiral path as it reaches ground level, and Image for a photo on the top of the bridge.

Springbourne: an empty inbound Wessex Way
Looking towards the town centre on the main Wessex Way (A338), during extra time in the World Cup semi-final between England and Croatia. It is not true to say that there was nothing at all on the road, but it was unusually quiet and it took me less than 30 seconds to take a traffic-free snapshot in each direction. See Image for the outbound view.

Malmesbury Park: footpath C18 from Ascham Road nears Portchester Road
This public footpath, also now a shared cycle route, runs along the north side of the main A338 Wessex Way, which is to our left. We see it here as it approaches the dead end of Portchester Road on its way to Wellington Road. Before the Wessex Way was built, there was no dead end and no footpath here - the road continued to our left and finished at what is now Portchester Place. See Image for the path as it arrives at the dead end ahead, and Image for the view of the path behind us at Ascham Road.

Springbourne: footpath C13 crosses the dead end of Portchester Place
This public footpath runs alongside the main A338 Wessex Way, and here passes the end of Portchester Place, which was a through road - Portchester Road - before the Wessex Way was built. A number of roads were severed in this way, but Portchester Place is unusual in having two short arms, seen here separated by a small green, because Ascham Road used to come out onto Portchester Road before the main road was built. See Image for the next picture along the footpath ahead, and Image for the next one behind us.
