Brickfield Cottage, Ramsdown Plantation
Almost entirely surrounded by the conifers of Ramsdown Plantation, this is Brickfield Cottage. The bridleway to this point from the Avon Causeway is called Brick Kiln Lane. Presumably there was a brickworks at some time around here.

Path on the common, East Ramsdown
The signboard at the junction of paths displays information from the Herpetological Conservation Trust who manage this area of heathland which used to be part of Ramsdown Plantation.

Small pond and mossy bank east of Ramsdown Plantation
The stumps show that conifers were clear felled from this area at some time. They are beginning to regenerate. I was struck by the prevalence of moss on this bank.

Mossy bank east of Ramsdown Plantation
An area that has been clear felled of conifers in the past and where rhododendrons have also been removed more recently. Both the conifers and the rhododendrons are regenerating but the bank is currently mainly moss covered. The trees beyond are part of Ramsdown Plantation.

Bell heather and birch scrub, East Ramsdown
This sandy slope has been cleared of its planted pines and is being restored to heathland. It is managed by the Herpetological Conservation Trust (HCT), who are obviously interested in the lizard populations on the heath. The area has been sprayed to eliminate bracken, and here silver birch saplings are springing up. The bell heather on the path is in bloom, and heather on the heath in the distance is flowering too.

Restored heathland, East Ramsdown
This heathland is managed by the Herpetological Conservation Trust. The land was previously planted with pines as part of Ramsdown Plantation, some of which remain. The area has been sprayed to eliminate the regrowth of bracken, presumably to keep the reptile population happy.
