The West Christchurch Neighbourhood Policing Team cover a large residential and commercial area including Bournemouth International Airport. The patch also encompasses the more rural area of Burton. We are fortunate to have some fantastic areas of natural beauty such as St Catherine’s Hill. The area possesses a mix of demand around urban and rural crime problem profiles.

Christchurch Town Centre is a busy commercial centre. The team have an active role in the Shopwatch scheme to identify and address acquisitive crime. The town centre is supported by good transport links, including Christchurch Train Station. We have good links with British Transport Police and run joint operations to target those misusing the rail network to facilitate crime. The town is the main location for the Christchurch’s nightlife with various pubs and bars. The team work with these establishments, and our Licensing Department, in an active Pubwatch scheme to reduce crime and disorder.

The area forms a natural peninsular bordered by the River Stour to the west and south with Bournemouth on the far bank and to the east by the River Avon with Purewell Ward on the opposite bank. These rivers merge at the southern tip of the peninsular and enter Christchurch harbour. The recreational spaces of The Priory and Convent Meadows, Millhams Common and The Quomps are well used by local residents and visitors alike.

To the north of the area the Burton & Winkton is largely rural. The historic village of Burton has grown into a large suburb of Christchurch where most of the ward population live.

We aim to engage with local schools and provide inputs to young people on topical matters to divert them from offending and build positive relationships. We work closely with local Councillor's and housing groups to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour problems. We aim to identify vulnerability and address this with the support of our partners through attendance at Operational Partnership Meeting and our Risk Management conferences.

Priorities

1 Oct 2023

Drug Dealing

Drug Dealing came out top in the concerns raised most recently in our priority surveys. As a team we understand that this has a detrimental impact on the local community. The team carry out checks on vulnerable persons who are subject to being ‘cuckooed’. This is where dealers will exploit those who use drugs, take over their homes using violence and threats of violence. We work to reduce the risk to such individuals. We seek to target people that are bringing drugs into the area and liaise with partners to increase our disruption activity.

1 Oct 2023

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) came out as a second priority in our surveys. ASB impacts on people’s lives and can be extremely personal. We are committed to supporting the community and tacking this head on. We work regularly with the Local Authority to target, disrupt and deter Anti-Social Behaviour. We effectively use civil orders such as Community Protection Notices, Anti-Social Behaviour Injunctions and Closure Orders, to deal with the most prolific people and impose prohibitions on them. We encourage reporting from the community to assist us with the evidence gathering process.
