Holton Heath: a mighty truck heads for Wytch Farm
Surely one of the largest vehicles ever to be driven along Dorset's roads, this truck is carrying a large piece of equipment bound for the Wytch Farm oilfield (in Image and Image), as the plant undergoes major development in 1989. My sister and I are posing at its back end. The consignment was brought down here from the Midlands and its route had to be carefully planned, to avoid any low (and even high) bridges! Some of the nearby roundabouts had to have lampposts temporarily uprooted in order that the truck could finish its journey. The 220-foot-long vehicle is seen here at rest on the Holton Heath Trading Estate road just off the main A350. This was probably the last break in its journey before arriving at its destination. It would have been fun seeing it reversed into this position!
