The St Peters Finger, Lytchett Minster, Dorset
The unusual name of the St Peter's Finger Inn is an Anglicisation of 'St Peter ad Vincula', which means St Peter in chains; the disciple was often depicted as a prisoner.

Sign for the St Peter's Finger
A particularly well-known sign, show the saint with his left forefinger pointing aloft to heaven. Many writers have moralised about this encouragement to think of spiritual rather than worldly matters. It is said, however, that 'finger' was a local interpretation of Latin vincula 'chains', used to describe the celebration of Peter's release b the angel from the chains in which Herod Agrippa I had confined him. This incident sometimes causes the saint to be shown with a chain as an emblem instead of his usual key or keys.
