Former chapel and cinema, Garden Field, Wyke
This was built in 1885 as the Zion Congregational Chapel. In 1926 it was converted into a silent picture hall with 600 seats by John Lambert of Leeds. It became known as Wyke Hippodrome, but closed down in 1931. The building was then used as a billiard hall for several years before re-opening in 1937 with a sound system. A wide screen was fitted around 1954, by which time it was called the Wyke Star. It closed abruptly on 26 Feb 1959 due to a fire. Entrance to Garden Field, Wyke
Several narrow streets lead off Town Gate. Garden Field splits into two branches around the former chapel / cinema (see closer photograph for details of this building). Another narrow lane, really only a footpath, leads to Temperance Field.
