Idle Working Men's Club
The wonderfully named Idle Working Men's Club on the corner of High Street and Walter Street, Idle. People all over the world (including pop singer Michael Jackson apparently) have applied for affiliate membership to the club, attracted by the name and the club's badge of a man leaning on a shovel. Opened in 1928 by sewage workers who were unable to get a drink down the pub after the evening shift, Idle W.M.C. also claims to have been the first such club to grant full membership to women as well as men.

The Idle Working Mens Club
Apart from many a joke about the name of this club, I knew of it because my late mother in law worked here at one time (before I knew her). It opened in 1928.

The New Inn, High Street, Idle
Listed grade II (list entry 1133108) where it is described as originally an early 19th century house. Watson devotes a whole page of his book to its history: briefly it was built as a house for William Hillas, becoming an inn by 1822, the freehold perhaps surprisingly being held by a Quaker Trust, who sold it into private hands in 1914.
