Airshaft, Foulridge Tunnel, Leeds & Liverpool Canal
I apologize for the motion blur of some of this image, but it was taken looking up into the central airshaft of Foulridge Tunnel on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal as we passed underneath in a narrowboat. The water cascading down through this portal made for rather an uncomfortable photographing experience! The nascent stalactites around the mouth of the shaft are quite an interesting feature. There are three air shafts along the length of the tunnel, this being the central one.

Boating on the reservoir
A small boat at the northern end of Foulridge Lower Reservoir. The prominent tower on the distant hilltop is shown as Stansfield Tower [after the person who had it built in 1890] on the OS map, but is more generally known as Blacko Tower. Further away and to the left is the bulk of Pendle Hill.

Lake Burwain (Lower Foulridge Reservoir)
Foulridge Lower Reservoir, which is fed from Foulridge Upper Reservoir, is also known as Lake Burwain. It used by anglers and is also home to the Burwain Sailing Club. The two reservoirs were built in the 1800s, not to store drinking water but to feed the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The northern end of the lower reservoir, seen here, was built almost directly over the Foulridge canal tunnel.
