Bust of Wallace Hartley
"Bandmaster of the RMS Titanic who perished in the foundering of that vessel, April 15th 1912. Erected by voluntary contributions to commemorate the heroism of a native of this town". This memorial stands outside the Methodist Church in Albert Street where Hartley began his musical career. After the iceberg struck, the band continued to play to calm the passengers seeking to escape the sinking ship; not one of the musicians was saved.

Footpath between Shaw Street and Duke Street, Colne, Lancashire
The lower road in the picture, now without any buildings, is Shaw Street, and behind the photographer is the once-notorious Waterside district, now almost all demolished. The terrace houses are in Duke Street, but when these were built in the Victorian period it was considered that a junction between Duke Street and Shaw Street would be too steep for wheeled traffic: therefore the connection was by this attractive footpath.
