The lower road in the picture, now without any buildings, is Shaw Street, and behind the photographer is the once-notorious Waterside district, now almost all demolished. The terrace houses are in Duke Street, but when these were built in the Victorian period it was considered that a junction between Duke Street and Shaw Street would be too steep for wheeled traffic: therefore the connection was by this attractive footpath.
