James Thornber, Holmes Mill, Clitheroe - steam engine
This weaving mill was powered by steam until 1973. An earlier engine had apparently been a beam engine but this horizontal cross compound by Clayton, Goodfellow & Co Ltd of Blackburn was installed in 1910. This is the low pressure side with a slide valve and the high pressure side had Corliss valves but is hidden behind the flywheel. The cylinders are 15" & 30" bores by 36" stroke and the flywheel is 12' 6" diameter. The engine was of c350 horsepower and that would correspond to about 700 looms. This room still retains the engine and is part of the Bowland Beer Hall

Holmes Mill, Clitheroe
Now the Bowland Brewery and Beer Hall. The 1910 horizontal cross compound mill engine by Clayton, Goodfellow of Blackburn is now in the dining area. We were very lucky to grab a small high table alongside the engine and I took this sat down waiting for my dinner. An earlier view is here - Image

An earlier engine had apparently been a beam engine but this horizontal cross compound by Clayton, Goodfellow & Co Ltd of Blackburn was installed in 1910. This is the flywheel seen from the low pressure side of the engine. The ropes pass through a grill just before the second motion shaft that drove the shed. The grill is an anti-surge device and although described in the text books is quite an uncommon feature. The cylinders are 15" & 30" bores by 36" stroke and the flywheel is 12' 6" diameter. An earlier engine had apparently been a beam engine but this horizontal cross compound by Clayton, Goodfellow & Co Ltd of Blackburn was installed in 1910. This is the high pressure side with Corliss valves fitted with Craig's trip gear under the control of the Whitehead governor. The cylinders are 15" & 30" bores by 36" stroke and the flywheel is 12' 6" diameter. The engine was of c350 horsepower and that would correspond to about 700 looms.
