This weaving mill was powered by steam until 1973. An earlier engine had apparently been a beam engine but this horizontal cross compound by Clayton, Goodfellow & Co Ltd of Blackburn was installed in 1910. This is the high pressure side with Corliss valves and the low pressure side had a slide valve but is hidden behind a pile of tubes. The cylinders are 15" & 30" bores by 36" stroke and the flywheel is 12' 6" diameter. The engine was of c350 horsepower and that would correspond to about 700 looms. This room still retains the engine and is part of the Bowland Beer Hall Image
