Town Hall Square, Great Harwood
The monument is erected to the memory of John Mercer of Great Harwood. Mercer invented the process known as mercerisation which strengthens cotton threads and gives them a lustrous appearance and has been much used in the manufacture of cotton and other textile goods.

The Mercer Memorial Clock Tower
The Mercer Memorial Clock Tower was erected in 1903 in memory of John Mercer. Mercer, who was born in the town, was an industrial chemist who revolutionised the dyeing of cotton with his invention of the process of “Mercerisation” which improves lustre, handling and other properties of the cotton. The monument is a Grade II listed building (http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-183883-mercer-memorial-tower-great-harwood British Listed Buildings).

The Chambers
Great Harwood’s Town Hall was completed in 1900; it was built on the site of a row of ancient cottages. The listed building was re-opened in 2011 as a new business and enterprise centre, known as “the Chambers”. It is a Grade II listed building (http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-183882-town-hall-great-harwood British Listed Buildings).
