Higher Mill and the mill pond, Helmshore
Part of the Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, this is Higher Mill and the mill pond. Higher Mill houses the waterwheel, currently being restored, which powered the fulling stocks used for spinning and weaving wood and working the woven wool material into durable cloth. The viaduct to the left is a defunct section of the East Lancashire Railway.

Higher Mill, Helmshore
This is the 1789 woollen finishing mill with water powered fulling stocks. The mill pond is in the foreground with sluices to the waterwheel on the left. the breastshot wheel is through the arch and can still turn. A disused railway viaduct is seen extreme left and is providing a vantage point. The roof of Whitaker's Mill (also part of the museum complex) is just visible above Higher Mill. The chimney with a tree growing out of it is on a mill down the road. This is a superb site and has had a major revamp. There are enthusiastic guides to explain and demonstrate in both mills and at £4 (2011 price) it is excellent value.

Leat entering Higher Mill, Helmshore
The channel that fed the waterwheel inside the building. Part of the mill was demolished when the railway viaduct was built through it in 1847/8.
