Forty Steps, Longfield Lane, Barnoldswick
Walking westwards along Longfield Lane, after crossing Gillians Beck by means of a footbridge, one encounters these steps. Although they have been known for over a hundred years as 'Forty Steps', there are actually only 39.

Bancroft engine house and chimney
This complex is all that remains of the last weaving shed built in Barnoldswick. The shed was closed in 1978 and the preserved engine house opened in 1982. The 600 horsepower cross compound engine is run at full speed and you get a real feel of what an operating mill engine was like. This is possibly the best view but the light was not with me.

Bancroft Mill Engine Trust - the Bradley engine
This was the first official public steaming of this 1901 Smith Bros & Eastwood tandem compound engine in its new home at Barnoldswick. It came from Cross lane Mills, Low Bradley near Skipton and its installation has been a labour of love. It had been running quite sedately and very smoothly a little earlier and I photographed it at the end of the day when the public had dispersed.
