Footpath to the Fish House
This is the entrance to the field where the medieval Abbot's Fish House stands.
In the middle ages this was the shore of Meare Pool, a large area of inland water which provided the fish. It was drained for agriculture long ago.

At the junction of Porter's Hatch
A sliver of green has been used as a display area, as well as for road signage. The concrete trough used as a planter appears to have been made in Ditcheat - not so far away.

The Abbot's Fish House
An ancient building on the Levels remains after meany centuries. It is thought to have been built between 1322-35 for the Abbot of Glastonbury, which lies a few miles east. With the importance of fish for eating in monastic circles of the time, this building seems to have been made for organising fishing here. At that time there was a large freshwater lake as well as the many rhynes that cross the landscape. To that end, it may be more appropriate to call it the Abbey Fisherman's House; it was an occupied residence but also may have had space to entertain the dignitaries on festival days.
Following the Dissolution, the building had different owners and uses (mainly food storage) before finally becoming a Grade I listed structure. It had suffered a bad fire around 1880 and there have been restorations - the latest being in 1912, 1950 and 2002.

Meare Fish House
Meare Fish House is the only surviving monastic fishery building in England, it was the residence of Glastonbury Abbey's official in charge of the nearby lake and its fishery, and it provided facilities for fish-salting and drying

Fish House interior
The building dates from around the 1330s but in later life was in more agricultural use following the Dissolution. It suffered a bad fire in the 1880s which destroyed the original timbers of the roof.
